2001 A Space Odyssey Star Gate Scene?

Anyone who's seen this movie; I know that the effects in this movie
are not CGI, so does anyone have an idea how the opening star gate
scene is achieved? (Mainly when the man is shown vibrating and the
lights are coming toward the screen)
