Morning Grind: 'Arrested Development' Movie Totally Definitely Absolutely Probably Going to Happen in 2013
Zach Galifianakis wasn't the only comedy titan making news at the NYer Festival over the weekend. On Sunday, the cast of 'Arrested Development' and creator Mitch Hurwitz sat down with NYer television critic Nancy Franklin to discuss their beloved series, and when talk turned to the long-rumored feature film version, Hurwitz had an update. "We're 80 percent of the way to an answer," he said, before revealing that there are also plans to do a short-run television series to catch fans up on the lives of the Bluth clan during the last five years. All that needs to happen now is some studio cooperation and the usual cutting of red tape. Said star Jason Bateman: "There's business left to be done, but creatively we are all on board and have a very specific plan about how it would come out and what we would do and when we would shoot it. I think we're targeting next summer to shoot it." Later, Bateman tweeted that the film could get released in early 2013. As for the limited-run series, Deadline reports that Showtime and/or Netflix could be interested. Don't hold your breath or anything, but feel free to dance like a chicken as soon as possible. [NYT/ArtsBeat] The cast of 'Flight,' director Robert Zemeckis' first non-motion capture film since 'Cast Away' in 2000, is coming together nicely. Oscar winner Melissa Leo and James Badge Dale are in talks to join Denzel Washington, Bruce Greenwood and the already negotiating Don Cheadle in the film, which focuses on an alcohol and drug-addicted airline pilot (Washington), who becomes a hero after safely landing a malfunctioning aircraft. Leo would play an investigator trying to prove the pilot was negligent; Dale, a dying cancer patient. [THR] Director Gavin O'Connor loves to-the-point titles. The 'Warrior' director (who previously helmed 'Miracle') has attached himself to 'The Samurai,' about an international assassin on the lam with a woman and her child. Just a note, Gavin: drop the "the"; it's, cleaner. [Deadline] Excited about the entire 'Harry Potter' book series coming available via Pottermore later this month? Don't be: the AP reports that sale plans have been pushed to 2012. [AP] Moviefone's Mike Ryan was disappointed with the Melissa McCarthy-hosted episode of 'Saturday Night Live' this weekend, but not audiences: ratings were up four percent from the season premiere, and eight percent from the second episode last year. [Deadline] Can you guess Netflix's most-rented film ever? Hint: It's not 'Crash'! (That's No. 2.) [THR] Photo: Neilson Barnard/Getty Images for The NYer Watch Movies For Free Online
